At 3 a.m. on a chilly night in Allen, Texas, a sharp-eyed police officer noticed something that didn't belong behind a grocery store — a tied garbage bag, visibly shaking in the dark. Inside was a tiny, frightened puppy no more than 8–10 weeks old, alone and discarded as if she had no value at all.
The officer didn't hesitate. He immediately called the on-call animal control officer from the Allen, Texas Animal Shelter, making sure the precious puppy was in caring hands before his shift moved on. Because of her young age, she couldn't go to a traditional shelter — she needed warmth, round-the-clock attention, and the kind of love only a home can provide.
That call found its way to me. I'm Elizabeth Felker, founder of Bowes Buddies, a foster-based nonprofit animal rescue in North Texas. I stepped up without hesitation, opening my home to this fragile little survivor. What was meant to be a temporary foster arrangement quickly became something much more. I had built an entire organization around saving animals — I couldn't walk away from this one. I named her Aspen, and I officially adopted her. Today, Aspen lives at the very heart of Bowes Buddies as one of our beloved mascots. I founded a nonprofit to save animals — and then watched our mission come to life through an 8-week-old puppy who had every reason to distrust the world and chose love anyway.
I founded Bowes Buddies believing I had something to offer — hard work and an unwavering commitment to saving the lives of innocent dogs and cats. What I didn't expect was to be taught something in return, and certainly not by a dog who once fit inside a garbage bag.
Watching Aspen's story unfold — from a terrifying night behind a grocery store to becoming a symbol of everything this organization stands for — reminded me that rescue isn't just about saving animals. It's about what happens after the save. It's the foster who shows up at 2 a.m. It's the family that can't let go. It's an 8-week-old puppy who somehow survives the unsurvivable and then wags her tail like the world is a wonderful place.
Aspen didn't just find a home. She became our north star. Every dog and cat we foster, every adoption we celebrate, every campaign we run — she is the living example of why our work matters so deeply.
